The inspiration for the ‘Periodic Table of Usual elements’ was a menu found in a Japanese restaurant in Austria in 2015, with the title ‘Guten Appetit’, written in gold letters on a white leather binding. In a global context defined by troubled politics and dramatic ecological incidents such as global warming, deforestation, Fukushima, etc., both the title of the menu and its design leads Véronique Bourgoin to question what « feeds » our daily lives and who the « cooks » are. This research began with the creation of an edition in which Google became a laboratory and chemistry an algorithm.

«By making Google her primary resource, Bourgoin engages in a systematised process, like that begun by Mendeleev a century before. She identifies resource images (plastic pollution in the oceans, mass food production, pesticides, etc.); then she extracts a sample from them until she obtains a monochrome which she then associates with the chemical or physical element or the mathematical value corresponding to one of the disturbing elements in relation to the context of the source image. The resulting monochromes are inserted with ghostly figures from the back, of the top 20 listed in 2015 on the Forbes website. The elements or values are then classified in the Periodic Table and the ‘sample’ image is replaced by the logo and name of the company whose activity is related to the resource image. The Table is a kind of screen on which it is possible to identify the driving force of modern life, and which invites the viewer to decrypt himself and to question his or her own behaviour. »1

The project is therefore divided into several stages. The production of an edition with several elements including a poster of the painting which can also be visited on this website created for the artist books.[1]

Two explosions in the Chinese port of Tianjin that killed more than 100 people last week could generate total insurance losses of $1 billion to $1.5 billion, Credit Suisse analysts said citing initial estimates from Chinese media. Tianjin, the world's third-largest port in terms of total cargo volume, was hit on August 12 by blasts that damaged a large industrial area and sent shockwaves across several kilometers. Insurance companies including Zurich Insurance Group AG and Allianz SE said on Friday they had received claims from clients that had been affected by the disaster but could not provide any estimate of the potential losses. Chinese insurers are also expected to be affected.
